Latest information on the HP printer update causing failures of aftermarket chips (Continued from 14/09/
The good news is that there is a chip solution available for the 950/951, 934/935, 970/971 cartridges as of now!
We know of three chip manufacturers who have a working chip compatible with the latest update. We also know that chips from two of the three manufacturers were not affected by the update and continued to work as they should.
So what happened exactly?
As you are aware HP released an update which caused a great majority of the aftermarket and remanufactured 950/951, 934/935 and 970/971 chips to stop working and display the 'damaged cartridge' error. It seems the error mainly impacted on the chip manufacturer who, at a guess, holds approx 80-90% aftermarket worldwide market share of inkjet chip sales. They are highly regarded in the industry and without them many of the aftermarket inkjet solutions would not be available today.
So did they get caught out or was it a deliberate attempt to stop that chip from working?
So how do we fix this problem?
We are receiving replacement chips and we have a container arriving which contains the Ausjet 950/951 cartridges with the updated chip. We expect both of these to be in stock by October 7th.
This update has certainly had an impact!
We expect possibly 10s or 100s of thousands of printers around the world would of suddenly stopped. The main reason is the choice they made to save money by buying an alternative brand, or maybe it was to support a local small business. Whatever the reason it's a totally frustrating and time wasting experience for the end user and all of us.
The Impact on the Aftermarket Reputation
Although we sent out an email not long after the update came through to inform all our customers about what was happening, we can be sure that a huge percentage of the end users may not be aware that it was a update that caused the cartridges to fail.
- Did they return the cartridges to where they purchased them or did they go out and buy the genuine product from another source?
- Did they go out and buy another aftermarket brand?
- Did they think to themselves 'enough is enough' and go out and buy a new $60 printer?
What has also happened is that the update has attracted media coverage. The news has made it to Australian radio stations and Australian websites. They say any news is good news and the aftermarket printing industry generally isn't newsworthy. On the other side of the coin we must take into account the worldwide effect on the reputation of the printer manufacturer surely it must of taken some kind of hit.
Example of one of the Australian sites covering this update :
A PR Nightmare for the Printer Manufacturer
Two class actions and general worldwide condemnation of this update has generated a PR nightmare for the printer manufacturer. Not only have they generated enormous negative publicity but it has also impacted on untold numbers of their loyal customers.
Apology from the Printer Manufacturer and New Firmware Update to fix the issue :
The printer manufacturer in question has officially apologised for the security update that has caused this issue. They also plan to release a new firmware update to fix the issue.

This is the location where HP will release the information when the new firmware update if relased : (This update is meant to allow the impacted chips to work once again.)

Summary
We will have a small quantity of new cartridges and new chips that will be available we expect around the 7th of October. This will fix the immediate problem, HP has also stated that they will offer a new firmware update that will allow the previous chips to work. They have mentioned two weeks before the update will be available.
So the options we will leave up to your discretion. If you would like replacement chips or cartridges when they arrive please let us know. Alternatively if you wish to wait until HP releases the new update which will enable the previous products to work it's entirely up to you. We will leave it up to what you feel is best for you and your customers.
I hope this information has been helpful to you.

It's important to remember that this is not a fault with the product itself but a change from the printer manufacturer that has made the chip not workable. We have removed all stock for sale and we recommend you do the same until a solution is found. This is not just related to 'Ausjet' but it is a worldwide problem.
Your only working immediate solution we are aware of is to use the genuine cartridge. We will keep you updated and advise of return or replacement details as soon as possible.

Change to HP Printers (firmware) causing failure of aftermarket cartridges & chips
It appears overnight in Australia and New Zealand, a change to various HP printers has resulted in aftermarket cartridges not been recognised or shown as damaged . At this stage we do not know the full extent with regards to our cartridges and or/chips or to the wider industry as a whole.
Cartridges affected :
HP 934 / 934 Series
Printers known so far :
8610, 8620
This may be a time based firmware change or possibly an automatic update for those printers that have not been updated previously. Or maybe a new firmware version?
We are in the process of gathering information. If you come across this problem with any of your customers can you please collect the printer model, the serial number which is located at the back of the printer and the firmware version.
This information will assist us and the chip manufacturers to quickly make a decision on what's the best course of action.
We will keep you updated as soon as we know more!
